Grappling with Grief?

As I was going through my IG, I stumbled upon an article about a Muslim Chaplain who was having health issues. Initially, he didn’t take it serious and attributed it to other existing illness he had been having over the years. When it got serious, he visited a Doctor and was then diagnosed with Liver cancer. Not stage One, but stage Four! Most scientific books state four stages one goes through when one is given a cancer diagnosis. These include anger, bargaining, grief and finally acceptance.

This Chaplain however when given this diagnosis was filled with a sense of ease and acceptance. He believed and trusted God’s Plan. He was filled with Tawakkul!

This got me thinking, what is our level of Tawakkul? If you were to be afflicted tomorrow with the same, what would be your first instinct response? Would you question  Allah “why me”
Would you cry your eyes out? Would you try to cling to this dunya so that you don’t lose it? Would you be afraid of death? Or would you immediately trust in Allah’s plan? Would you believe that everything that happens, it is because of His will.

Allah says in Suratul al Baqarah, that nothing is constant. Even the day changes to night. And through this all, we shall all be tested.

“And We will surely test you with something of fear and hunger and a loss of wealth and lives and fruits, but give good tidings to the patient,”

Qu’ran 2:155

However, He never forfeights us, He has promised us ease, not once but twice!. All we have to do is have sabr.

For indeed, with hardship [will be] ease.

Indeed, with hardship [will be] ease

Qu’ran 94:5-6

The key is to understand that nothing happens without the knowledge of Allah.

Say, “Never will we be struck except by what Allah has decreed for us; He is our protector.” And upon Allah let the believers rely.

Qu’ran 9:51

Getting to this level of reliance on Allah or state of tawakkul regardless of the magnitude of the problem, for a believer may seem hard but quite easy.

May Allah make it easy for us all as we seek nearness to Him. Ameen.

Allah knows Best. May He be Pleased with us All
